Description

Safety in the Elevator Industry is a 100-page, softcover book by 25-year vertical-transportation industry veteran Rodrigo Gomes, who spent a large part of his career overseeing occupational safety and health in both Germany and Brazil for TK Elevator (TKE). Gomes has held additional roles with TKE in maintenance, sales and engineering, and says his new book is the result of the collective effort of many individuals — not only those who directly contributed but also those he had the privilege of observing and engaging with professionally over the years. Meaningful workplace conversations, in large part, led to the book, subtitled what frontline leaders need to know.

This small but excellent book advises leaders on how to manage safety in a VT company, taking a combination practical and philosophical approach. It is written in a conversational, easy tone, and the author uses personal experiences to drive home his points, along with relevant, strategically placed quotes from a Harvard business professor, an Israeli business management guru, author Lewis Carroll, theoretical physicist Albert Einstein and philosopher Plato. In addition to Acknowledgements and a Forward, there are 14 sections or chapters, many of which include three to four "key takeaways" at the end. Seven colored figures illustrate data such as the total VT market for new installation, maintenance and modernization; major risks; serious injuries and fatalities; precursors; effective safety routines; non-fatal accident rates; and more.

The book includes specific instructions on what to do when there is an accident or fatality. Although Safety in the Elevator Industry is written for frontline leaders, anyone who cares about safety in VT will likely glean something from this book.
