Applicants must follow the testing site requirements to successfully complete the exam.

In addition, in order to complete the DBPR Certificate of Competency application process, applicants must have successfully passed this examination, provide proof of the required verifiable work experience, and must meet the eligibility requirements necessary for a credential to be issued in accordance with Section 399.01(17), Florida Statute.

The code questions for the Florida Certificate of Competency Exam have been updated to reflect the A17.1 2019 Code.

The State of Florida Certificate of Competency Exam will test your general knowledge of elevator installation and maintenance as well as your core knowledge on the ASME A17.1 2019 Safety Code for Elevators, Escalators and Moving Walks, Elevator Maintenance Manual by Zack McCainField Employees' Safety Handbook, and Installation Manual published by Elevator World Inc. All of the books are available from www.elevatorbooks.com.

Elevator Maintenance Manual, 3rd Edition by Zack McCain

An in-depth guide, designed for the service technician, covering elevator maintenance programs and practices as related to electric and hydraulic elevators. Also covers escalators and moving walks. This publication is a comprehensive how-to guide that can be used for training classes or home study. In addition to technical material, the manual presents topics such as Public Relations, Maintenance Safety, Maintenance Control and Trouble Shooting. References to acceptance and periodic tests of elevators have been updated to A17.1 2019 edition requirements. Pages 258 - Cost $75.00

Field Employees' Safety Handbook

The most up-to-date safety procedures for protection of field employees on every construction or maintenance job. The Elevator Industry Field Employees' Safety Handbook is edited by the NEII Safety Committee.  Cost - $13.00

Installation Manual

Devoted to the actual process of installing elevators, both hydraulic and traction, as well as escalators. This book is brimming with photos of actual field installation procedures and a multitude of diagrams. Although published for quite some time, the information continues to be timely and valuable. The manual includes a brief history of elevators, lessons in layout drawings and reading, and describes the installation process for a traction elevator from the pit through the hoistway and into the overhead machine room. Step-by-step descriptions are included for hydraulic elevators and escalators. Pages 505 - Cost $65.00

The A17.1 2019 Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators covers the design, construction, operation, inspection, testing, maintenance, alteration, and repair of the following equipment, its associated parts, and its hoistways, where located in or adjacent to a building or structure (except as modified by 1.2): (a) hoisting and lowering mechanisms, equipped with a car or platform, which move between two or more landings. This equipment includes, but is not limited to elevators (see 1.3). (b) power-driven stairways and walkways for carrying persons between landings. This equipment includes, but is not limited to escalators and moving walks (see 1.3). (c) hoisting and lowering mechanisms equipped with a car that serves two or more landings and is restricted to the carrying of material by its limited size or limited access to the car. This equipment includes, but is not limited to dumbwaiters and material lifts (see 1.3). Cost $410.00

You will have three (3) hours once you have started to complete the exam. The exam contains 50 multiple choice questions randomly selected from a database of over 750 questions consisting of the following pools/categories:


  • 12 questions on maintenance
  • 13 questions on codes
  • 12 questions on installation
  • 13 questions on safety

Once you purchase the exam, you will have a maximum of 3 months to take the exam before it expires, after which you will have to pay the full value again. You must score 75% (38 correct answers) in order to pass the exam. If you are unsuccessful and do not pass the exam, you will be eligible to retake the exam. However, the questions will most likely not be the same or in the same order. In order to facilitate studying, you must wait at least 14 days before retaking the exam.
