This test is based on the article, A Look at A17.4, published in the October 2025 issue and counts as one contact hour (0.1 CEU) of elevator industry continuing education credit. This course is approved by NAEC for CET/CAT and .01 CE QEI and in the following states: Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin. This test is approved only for Elevator Mechanics in the State of Wisconsin.
Learning Objectives - After reading this article, you should have learned:
- Know the location of and have access to the Group 1-3 keys and devices including the machine room and the machine room key.
- Identify and confirm that the stalled elevator is de-energized.
- Follow the rescue procedures of the A17.4 Guide for Emergency Personnel.
- Follow the rescue plan.
- Have the proper equipment for the landing and the machine room procedures.

Author Bio
With more than 44 years in the vertical-transportation industry, Max Stanley is currently a retired member of the International Union of Elevator Constructors. He retired from a major elevator manufacturer having held several office positions, including service operations manager and branch manager, and he served on local education committees for more than 20 years. He currently holds an inspector certification: QEI 2687. Since retirement, he has continued in the industry as an instructor. He has presented both A17.4 Guide for Emergency Personnel and escalator start up procedures to hospitals, airports, RFDs, condominiums and commercial buildings.
